This is the start of my new collection of great matches in NXT (including a few extras possibly) in 2017. We have already watched #DIY vs The Revival for a couple of times and their latest encounter in 2016 had been voted Match of the Year in the entire WWE. But since this one here probably was the last match of The Revival in NXT and what better way to start 2017 than with a #DIY match, I go for this one. Enjoy!
Episode: NXT #230
Recorded: 05 January 2017
Aired: 11 January 2017
Match duration: 14:03 minutes (plus two commercial breaks)
Thinking about this match-up between #DIY and The Revival, there is already a lot of history and tension in their story that you automatically get goosebumps when their musics hit for the upcoming match. It wasn’t that hard to guess that #DIY would win because it had been already made clear that the winner of this match would face The Authors of Pain at NXT TakeOver: San Antonio on 28 January 2017. Since there is always a re-match clause for the losers of a championship, #DIY had to win here.
And they did. But, of course, they had to suffer first. All focus of Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder had been on the left knee of Johnny Gargano again, an injury spot that basically tells the whole story of this rivalry that came to an end with this very match. The Revival established themselves as the brutal force with vicious chemistry who almost took out #DIY again. But finally in came Tommaso Ciampa to show that he is able to even top the brutality and viciousness of The Revival.
In the end, this wasn’t their best match against each other because we’ve already seen that in Toronto with the 2-out-of-3 falls match. But it still was fun to watch with lots of great spots like Tommaso Ciampa throwing himself into the timekeeper’s area. And in the end, the This is awesome chant from the audience was well deserved.
Winner: #DIY (Tommaso Ciampa & Johnny Gargano)
What happened after that match was a nice transition from one feud to the next for #DIY. Yes, we knew about that match between them and The Authors of Pain was already scheduled but it was nice to add some tension to the story. I’m not really looking forward to the commentary to this forthcoming match because I’ll be as annoyed by Corey Graves as ever. I also can’t tell if #DIY are chosen to be the first tag team to beat The Authors of Pain or if they are already doomed to lose their titles immediately. And if #DIY win, I can only imagine this via disqualification to The Authors of Pain. Most certainly, Paul Ellering will be involved again to add even more tension.
